There are fears that the GAME website's user database has been hacked, with hackers getting hold of over 200 customers' email addresses and passwords in clear text.

Softpedia.com reports that GAME's site "contained a shell injection vulnerability that allowed the hackers to access its databases and expose their customers."

Another gaming website, Catalyst-Gaming, has reportedly experienced similar problems with hackers, having their usernames, email addresses and passwords leaked.

We've contacted GAME for an official comment.

The news comes at a time when Microsoft has had to dispel rumours about Xbox Live security, reassuring customers that there has been no breach in the service.

What with the ease of paying online for games, both digital and physical copies, and with Playstation 3 users still recovering from the PSN scandal, this makes for very troubling reading.

Anyone with an account on either GAME or Catalyst-Gaming should be warned, and are recommended to change their passwords.

Will keep this updated

GAME: We haven't been hacked

Reports of a security breach are 'entirely false,' says GAME.
game 01 -

Update: GAME security hasn't been compromised. The GAME websites have not been hacked, with no customer data compromised, the retailer has told MCV.

"At GAME we guard our customers' details very carefully," said GAME Group's Anna-Marie Mason.

"We have thoroughly investigated the hacking claims made today by the website Pastebin, and can confirm that they are entirely false. The published email addresses are not registered users of GAME.co.uk, and there has been no breach of our database security.

"We would like to assure all our customers that their details are well protected, and advise anyone who has any questions to contact our customer services team via the website, our Facebook page or Twitter account."

Original story

Troubled UK video games retailer GAME is the latest firm to find itself in hot water, after hackers breached its online security and exposed customer data.

Information, including customer email addresses and passwords stored in plain text are reported to have been obtained and then posted on the internet for all to see.

There's no indication that payment and credit card data was taken.

GAME is yet to offer an official comment.
VideoGamer.com Analysis

GAME is the latest firm to be affected by a string of security breaches, including Sony, Valve, Nintendo and Bethesda.

Although unconfirmed, anyone with a GAME account should change their password to be on the safe side. Likewise, if you use the same email address and password combination for other websites, you should also do your best to change these too.
