Taken from Eurogamer.

Microsoft will reveal its next-generation Xbox at an event on 21st May, multiple reports have suggested.

The console will launch in "early November", seasoned Microsoft analyst Paul Thurrot has revealed. These details have been independently backed up by The Verge.

Named just "Xbox", Microsoft's machine will be "expensive" and cost around $500 (roughly £326, although likely higher in the UK). A lower price $300 (£195) model will also be available with some form of subscription.

Veteran Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrot in action.
Regarding the console's rumoured "always-online" component, Thurrot reiterated what we knew already - that previous Microsoft design documents have mentioned the feature.

"Looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes," Thurrot claimed. "And that's all I have, but it does say that."

Recently-leaked internal documentation dated to last year referenced the console's "always on, always connected" design.

Microsoft was coy in its apology for comments made by senior employee Adam Orth last week that appeared to support an "always on" console. The company's statement was careful to apologise for Orth's poorly chosen words while steering clear of addressing the subject in general.

Thurrot's report also mentioned two other unannounced Xbox-branded machines. One, code-named "Yumo", was to be an Xbox device purely for entertainment apps, rather than games. The product has seemingly been canned to avoid confusing consumers.

The other machine is a new budget-priced Xbox 360 model, code-named "Stingray". Due for release later this year, the device will cost just $99 (£65). Thurrot suggested this may mean Microsoft's new Xbox would not play Xbox 360 games.

Adam Orth has since 'resigned' after the following between himself and BioWare designer Manveer Heir-

On Twitter he explained that "every device is now 'always on'". "That's the world we live in," he added, followed by the hashtag "#dealwithit".

His Twitter feed was made private following an exchange with senior BioWare designer Manveer Heir.

"Did you learn nothing from Diablo 3 or SimCity?" Heir asked him. "You know some people's internet goes out, right? Deal with it is a sh***y reason."

"Electricity goes out too," Orth replied.

"You've lived in LA, San Francisco, Seattle... very connected places. Try living in Janesville, WI or Blackburg, VA," Heir countered.

"Why on earth would I live there?" Orth concluded.

Also rumoured connection to 'cable' box-

The next Xbox will operate similarly to Google TV and overlay its features and UI on top of existing stations, suggests a report by The Verge citing several sources familiar with Microsoft.

This makes sense given the glut of "always-online" rumours surrounding Microsoft's next console. The console will hook up to a cable box and The Verge's report noted that Microsoft is planning to go further than Google TV due to Microsoft's partnerships with content providers.

The report also noted that the next generation version of Kinect will be able to detect multiple people better as well as eye movement. This will be used to pause the TV when people look away. This feature is said to be used in Google's TV plans outside of just games.

Allegedly Microsoft is also planning to introduce its own low-cost "Xbox TV" set-top box, but not until next year, after its new console. This could be the previously rumoured "Yumo" project.

We'll know more when Microsoft officially unveils its next console

Kinda getting a little tired of all the rumors now and wish that M$ would just get on with it. Part of me wonders if they are drastically changing the architecture of the console after Sony's reveal given it will be good couple of months between them both announcing their new kit. If the rumors over always on internet access and blocking used games are true then I won't be getting one.

Either way, this little bit here sounds fucking horrific and is a real turn off as well

Rotfl

Looking like Sony all the way for me next time around, with some PC gaming thrown for good measure.

True it's only rumours, but I don't see anything from M$ to deny or confirm them, which is only leading to further speculation.

M$ need to do something spectacular to convince me to go with them over Sony.

Xbox "Sorry Chris, I can't let you do that......"

And then every Xbox around the world will do this-

There are other rumours saying that games MUST be installed first and the disc will become unreadable on other machines. Nothing confirmed, except maybe 'always on'.
