Developers will be able to add achievements to Xbox One titles on a weekly basis
Developers will be able to add new Achievements to existing Xbox One titles "every week", Microsoft has revealed, but they will be limited by a monthly cap designed to stop them from "overhwelm[ing] gamers" with additional Gamerscore.
Xbox One program manager Chad Gibson explained the move to OXM, revealing that Microsoft hopes developers introduce new Achievements to their titles "long after a game ships".
"We're seeing people get all 1,000 Gamerscore in the first two weeks, and then still be playing that game two months later," says Gibson. "We want developers to offer Achievements and interesting things to do long after a game ships. You could be playing a game for a year and get a couple thousand Gamerscore because the developer is adding new Achievements every week or every month."
But Microsoft will have restrictions in place to stop developers from flooding titles with new Achievements.
"Developers won't be adding 10,000 Gamerscore a day," Gibson continues. "The cap is, developers have Gamerscore they can spend every month. We don't want to overwhelm gamers."

Can there ever be so many achievements that we'd be overwhelmed?

Not sure how I feel about potentially monthly new achievements. I like to 100% games, but I do it at my own pace. This sort of feels like moving the goal away every time I near it. Years ago the dashboard had a section where it listed all the games you had 1000G in (or 200G for XBLA), until one day they change it to a list of games that you had 100% completed - including DLC, regardless of whether you owned it. Not sure if they still have it since they dicked the dashboard around so much, but I always resented them for changing it.

I do feel that the 100% should be for the main game achievements only, seeing as DLC is optional it shouldn't count.

This works well on PC. Guild Wars 2 in particular is great at adding achievements to stretch out new gameplay stuff with added or changed content.
I'm hoping games are less "static" next gen and evolve more with updates and patches like on PC and this would suit that.

Selks makes a good point - completionists are up in arms as its gonna be near impossible to complete a game 100% - its basically a way if you like to get 100% to stop you trading the game in as new achievements might come out next month and the month after that - doesnt bother me as i never sell a game but if you like to trade them in your fucked

I would USA that you're only fucked if your OCD about achievements.
People like what they like but I would not be sad to see the achievement whore side of gaming fall to the wayside in favour of using achievements to drive experiences within games.

I think you're overlooking the fact that it's the achievement whores for whom achievements are driving the ingame experience. People who don't give a damn about them won't start caring because they're released more often.Daz190uk wrote:People like what they like but I would not be sad to see the achievement whore side of gaming fall to the wayside in favour of using achievements to drive experiences within games.
