Sequel/Remake of Capcoms classic Strider heading to 360, PS3 and Next gen
To those of a certain age, Strider is regarded as one of the greatest games ever made.
An absolute smash hit in the arcades it was soon ported to every system under the sun, from casual machines like the Amiga and MegaDrive to the import-elite PC Engine and Sharp X68k. And it was the absolute mutt’s nuts.
After an abomination of a “sequel” in 1990 (by US Gold, publisher of the European ports of the original), which was quickly disowned, and a lacklustre official follow-up from Capcom in 2000, Hiryu is finally coming back to consoles in fitting fashion.
Coming in early 2014 to both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Strider is the latest cross-continental Capcom collaboration with a Western studio, as members of the original dev team at Capcom Osaka are working with California’s Double Helix Games.
Double Helix made similar East-West connections with Konami on the surprisingly good Silent Hill: Homecoming, as well as Square Enix with the scrappy Front Mission Evolved. And of course, it is also beavering away on the Xbox One version of Killer Instinct.
With the guidance of the original Strider gurus, we have every confidence that that this will be another DmC – Devil May Cry-esque success rather than an Operation Raccoon City-style disaster.
Check out the launch trailer and then behold seven minutes of gameplay footage below, and let us know what you think of the latest revamp of a Capcom classic!
