Microsoft has announced that Halo 5: Guardians will arrive on Xbox One in late 2015, meaning you now have one more reason to pick up Microsoft's new console.

343 Industries general manager Bonnie Ross described the game as a bigger effort than Halo 4, but added that it'll take "some core elements" from previous titles while taking "full advantage of the Xbox One's hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen."

Halo 5 will launch "fall" 2015, running at 60 frames per second on dedicated servers, confirmed Ross, who said that the team could now achieve "the scope, features and scale we've been dreaming of for more than a decade".

Guardians of the galaxy

We're promised more information at the Xbox E3 event on June 9, including details on some other "special" plans. As we're being told Halo 5 is a "journey" rather than a destination, perhaps early-access beta is on the cards?

Ross said that the new game will arrive in time for the Halo TV series, also set to hit screens towards the end of 2015.

So what will we have to tide us over until then? Halo 2 Anniversary would be a nice E3 announcement, eh Microsoft?

This should sell a fair few units I would guess.  Shame that it is still so far away but I daresay it will be worth the wait.  Also a shame that 343 havent followed up the excellent Anniversary edition of CE with an update of Halo 2 for 360 and/or XB1

So probably a later September 2015 release date. There are rumours floating around about MS announcing a Halo 2 Anniversary at E3, but this has me a tad sceptical about that now. This November will be the 10th anniversary (and the logical time to release it), the fact that they still haven't mentioned it yet suggests it won't be finished by November if they're making it and they won't want it to be too late into 2015 since they'll want to avoid releasing two different Halo games close to each other.

It is a shame that it's so far away, but at least by then they should have gotten to grips with the new hardware and they'll have no excuse for it not being lovely.

Maybe they will have Halo 2 out in time for its 10yr anniversary. It would be interesting to know what 343 have been working on since Halo 3 shipped in November 12 (minus DLC of course).

If Halo 5 launches late '15 that's nearly 3 years development time. In the same amount of time 343 were able to develop Halo 4 and Combat Evolved Anniversary.

I guess that they would have had earlier access to the XB1 hardware and chance to update or build a new engine which would be time consuming but I wonder if we will see Halo 2 as almost a test case for the game engine that will run 5.

Given the fantastic job 343 did with the visuals on 4 and how much they were able to extract from the 360, I can imagine Halo 5 will look stunning

They made the Anniversary campaign with a lot of help from Saber Interactive and had nothing to do with the multiplayer which was handled by a third development studio and just used Reach's multiplayer. If they remake Halo 2 then there'll be a massive push from the community to have them include the original Halo 2 multiplayer, so if they are making both games simultaneously then they must be outsourcing quite a bit of work.

ordinarily, im not a halo fan, but this interests me. i think its one of the problems with a series that has an ongoing narrative; when you are not there from the start, you cant pick up the later games with the same level of "care" that fans that have been there from day one do. i only very briefly tried halo 1 on the OG xbox, but my brief time with that console was spent playing fifa online and kotor 1 & 2 before the 360 released. so, being able to go through from start to finish in the (original) narrative seems like a plan to me.

That compilation is interesting but it depends what they do with the multiplayer.

Halo's mechanics are lovely and that always makes the mp fun.

However, the single player campaigns range from poor to average in my book although the plot is decent. The actual level design etc from Halo 1-3 is basic by today's standards though and I'm not sure I could slog through all of that these days. Halo 1 especially is just corridor after corridor.

New games we want not tarted up old games. When are we going to see some proper next gen games and not the cross generation, tarted up stuff we are getting at the moment? Nearly 8mths and still nothing which you can truely say "wow, this is why I bought a next gen console", which ever side of the console fence you sit.

Shame it's just a rumour from an unnamed source. I'd be pretty interested in this is it's all they're hyping it up to be, although I'm slightly sceptical. Combat Evolved Anniversary was a full priced release and I don't think it was quite 720p? So chances are we won't be seeing "proper" upscaling of the graphics of all 4 games to get them to around where Halo 4 is.

And then there's the matter of multiplayer; there's a massive outcry from die hard Halo fans to get a HD remake for Halo 2 with the original multiplayer. Now I can't see them including the MP of all 4 games (and consequently having the online population split between them) but it would feel like an odd choice if they included all 4 campaigns, but only Halo 2's MP gameplay - obviously they could use maps etc. from later games, the mechanics and weapons are the important bit, essentially they'd be going back to a time before sprint or many of the new weapons.

Another option is to have it running the same MP as Halo 5, then they aren't splitting Halo fans between two games (which is particularly important considering how quickly their population dropped off with Halo 4). But of course this means that the MP for Halo 5 would have to be done this year in time for The Master Chief Collection's release. It also means that the people who only buy Halo for the MP probably won't bother getting the MCC.

If it's announced at E3 then I'll be pleased and they'll have a lot of questions to answer, but if not then I'll get by.
