Xbox 720 details revealed, Xmas 2013 release

A recent tweet from Sean Tracey revealed he had visited a secret Microsoft summit named Durango it seems that the summits purpose was to detail the Xbox 720 to third parties. These details have now leaked.....

"VG247 has learned that Microsoft has now detailed Xbox 720 to certain partners and has internally confirmed the machine for a Christmas 2013 release.

The next generation Xbox will have a Blu-ray drive, contrary to a recent report.

Multiple sources have confirmed this morning that the machine will have two GPUs. One said: “It’s like two PCs taped together.”

We’re waiting for final confirmation of specs, but the graphics cards are thought to be equivalent to AMD’s 7000 series GPUs, but “not CrossFire or SLI”. The GPUs aren’t structured as they are in a normal dual PC set-up, in which the two chips take it in turns to draw lines of the same object: Xbox 720′s graphics units will be able to work independently, drawing separate items simultaneously.

It was reported last week that PlayStation 4, internally codenamed Orbis, will also be powered by AMD hardware.

There will be “four or six” cores to the Xbox 720 CPU, one of which will be reserved for Kinect and one for the OS.

Xbox 720 will require an always-on internet connection as an anti-piracy measure.

We’ve also been told that the next generation of Kinect will be built into the device as standard."

always on internet would be absolute stupidity for those with dubious internet connections or those who simply play offline.

I am not buying this always on internet rumour - there are many number of legitimate reasons for not being on the net all times and this kind of forced compliance is likely to steer a good few potential customers away the same as used game detecting methods being mooted.

if its true then count me out as I take my 360 away with me and live without XBL for a few days

Why have twin GPU's and not link them together by crossfire or SLI? Seems like a strange decision and surely can't be down to cost

Linked together basically turns 2 cards into 1 powerful card (meaning it is alot quicker but can only draw withing the limits of 1 card)

Having them seperate means that the 2 cards can do 2 seperate things at a time.


No Andy it's no April fools, Sean Tracey is one of the top dogs at Crytek and he posted this today

There is no way it will be "always on" it cuts out a 2 significant part of the market

will already be out of date compared with the PC market on release date by at least 12 months

hmmm I thinking along the lines of "how much will this be setting me back?"
