New Dashboard update can break your 360.....it's ok though M$ will give you a 250gb Slim as a replacement!

Microsoft has confirmed it will replace consoles of customers affected by the switch to an enhanced disc format

Xbox 360 replacements were being offered to a "very small number" of customers affected by the incoming disc format.

"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," a Microsoft spokesperson told NowGamer.

"This issue manifests itself a as a unique “disc unreadable” or “disc unsupported” error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox LIVE and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console. Any Xbox 360 owners receiving this error are encouraged to contact us at www.xbox.com/support/contact so we can verify if the console has been impacted."

There you have it. A small minority of gamers could be in for a shiny new upgrade very soon indeed - the original email states that the replacement console is a 250GB Xbox 360 S. If you don't get an email from Microsoft, you'll probably have to wait until the discs are widely used for the next wave of 360 games.

A firmware update to support the new format begins rolling out tomorrow.

It seemed like every update killed my 'original' 360 (red ring 5 times in total before a 'new' console sent),be interesting to see if the new update only kills the 'original' rather than the 'slim'.

I have an old 20gig arcade so surely it's got to be time to go, never had any issues with the thing though so don't hold much hope, when is the update due?

Surely M$ could release the serial numbers of machines affected, although that would create a market for the old machines

No it'll be all discs, the update changes the drives reading algorithms and some machines (No particular model) Don't like this and refuse to run games.

The update may not be here today M$ are staggering it between now and the 30th so it could be any time,,,

Has this hit yet? I've been reading that following this update you will be able to link your paypal account to live to fund purchases. Not sure if I'll link mine as in theory it's another way of M$ having access to card details.

Surely though using Paypal puts you in control - they arent a bank so funds cannot be drawn upon automatically like a direct debit or standing order. I don't mind having PP linked tbh

I was looking at it from an fleabay perspective, if you pay for something on ebay and you don't have enough funds in your paypal it automatically takes the remaining from your card/bank if you have these set up as alternative methods.

Yeah but at least you are the one triggering the transaction rather than giving M$ control. how your account is funded is a different issue

Of course but my fear of registering my card with M$ was that they had control over when money could be taken - paypal usage on Live will be totally in the hands of the user so M$ can't take money for subs etc as they see fit

any transaction i have done via paypal dictates that you allow the payment. havent seen any that do one automatically (like a direct debit) so in theory automatic renewal wont work unless you actively allow the payment.

I like this idea, I always seem to forget to pick up points etc when i'm out.

might be worth checking your subscription on your profile chaps, looking at mine the renewal cost is £23.99 which is cheaper than scouring ebay by my reckonning.

It had the same renewal price on mine aswell but in the small print it said some bollocks about having to then renew at the higher price at sub' end. If you canceld card before the next sub is due you should be fine. But from my experiance trying to cancel a card with M$ is fecking hard work. Amazon have got 12 months for a penny under 30 notes,so i got that.

ditto.
only time its different is if i sell on ebay. the money i get for my listing goes into my paypal account and sits there untill i move it to the bank. ebay will collect its fees from my paypal without me having to confirm but if there is nothing there ill get an invoice. they cant take directly from my bank without me confirming first. would be good having paypal linked but will deffo be checking the T's&C's assosiated with it
