Google unviels Nexus 7 tablet, Quad core CPU, 12 Core GPU(!!!!) £127! + Unvieling of Android 4.1

The firm announced the tablet at its Google I/O conference which started today in San Francisco. The Nexus 7 is available to pre-order today for £127 and willl launch mid-July.

Confirmed specifications include a 7in screen with a resolution of 800 x 1280, a 1.3Ghz nVidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and a 12-core GPU. The cheaper model has 8GB of storage and will retail at £127 but there is a 16GB available for a higher asking price.

Other features include a front facing camera, near-field communications (NFC) technology and a nine hour battery life. As expected Google has teamed up with Asus to produce the Nexus tablet which weights 340g.

The Nexus tablet will go up against the Apple iPad but a more direct target, given its price, is Amazon's own-brand Kindle Fire Google's Chrome is the new default web browser.

Breaking with tradition the Nexus tablet has débuted the next version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean. Previous versions of the mobile operating system have been launched with Nexus smartphones, the last of which was the Galaxy Nexus which introduced 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

The first countries to get the device are the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

i might have to pick one of these up for that kind of money.

how do the specs compare to the ipad? (i know there is a big price difference)

The iPad has a bigger screen, It also has a slightly more powerful CPU BUT the Nexus 7 has a dedicated 12 core GPU, The iPad has no seperate GPU, slightly better screen on the iPad too but also a £400 difference!

so is there any point getting another tablet if this is so good? didnt asus make cheaper tablets in the past with the `not so responsive` screens?
this price should cripple all other tablets out there at this price me thinks.

I think this is the deal breaker. Either the parts have become so cheap to produce now that the cost can be driven right down or compromises have been made in other areas away from the headline figures of CPU etc and the screen could be one of those areas....

Actually a lot of it does come down to the screen but not the quality, its highly doubtful Google will brand this as one of its own products if it can't live up to current standards, look at the mobiles they brand...all were/are top tier devices and the same applies here, the reason its so cheap comes down to the actual size of the screen...bigger screens cost an awful lot more which is why this is sized to compete with the Kindle Fire, its not the largest screen by a long stretch but the quality should be fine....
